This year’s summit welcomes the auto industry’s newest EV players
The 11th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit happening this week promises to be bigger in scope and in participation as the Asian Federation of Electric Vehicle Associations (AFEVA) recently announced its wholehearted endorsement of the 3-day event organized by the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP). The summit will take place from October 19th to 21st at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City.
AFEVA Chairman and EVAP president Edmund Araga said that this landmark event highlights its return to the origins of AFEVA’s establishment in 2017. The inaugural 1st ASEAN EV Summit, orchestrated by EVAP, was the pivotal moment when AFEVA was officially founded. This historic gathering marked the beginning of a collaborative journey, fostering a sense of camaraderie among ASEAN Electric Vehicle Associations, which has significantly propelled progress and innovation within the electric vehicle sector.
“The 11th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit provides an ideal platform for us to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the advancement of electric mobility in the ASEAN region. We are excited to continue the journey that commenced in 2017, sharing best practices, nurturing fruitful collaborations, and promoting sustainable transportation solutions,” said Araga. AFEVA Director Rommel Juan added, “This summit promises to be an invaluable opportunity for the exchange of insights and experiences. The 11th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit brings together key stakeholders in the electric vehicle industry, policymakers, innovators, and champions of sustainable transportation. The event participants are expected to engage in thought-provoking discussions, explore the latest technological advancements, and contribute to the ongoing transformation of the automotive landscape. Here are some of the key electric vehicle models from participating car brands for the event.
BYD
BYD Philippines will be unveiling the Atto 3, a five-seater, B-segment crossover SUV. It has a front-wheel drive full electricplatform that is rated at 203hp and 310N-m of torque, with a top speed of 160 kph with a 420km range.
Dongfeng
Diamond Auto Group EV Corp will introduce Dongfeng’s 100% electric commercial vehicle line up at the event, showcasing its EV pickup, EV van and EV light-duty truck models. Starting with its Dongfeng Rich6 True Electric Pick, it has a range of 350km to 450km, and is rated between 163PS to 177PS and 420Nm to 435N-m of torque. Secondly, Dongfeng’s 100% electric vehicle vans of various configurations are rated at 82PS to 95PS and 200N-m to 230N-m of torque. It has a range between 220km to 300km. Lastly, its Dongfeng 100% Electric light-duty trucks of various configurations have a power range between 82PS to 163PS and 200N-m to 320N-m of torque with a kilometer range between 280km to 350km to suit various delivery and logistical requirements.
Honqi
Honqi will feature two of its models at the event, the EHS9 luxury SUV that uses two electric motors rates at 215 hp and 300N-m of torque, with a range between 400km to 500km, depending on the trim level. The E-QM5, on the other hand, is the brand’s sedan electric vehicle that uses a permanent magnet synchronous motor that promises rated at 188 hp with a 431-km range at full charge.
Hyundai
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 features a fast 350-kW charger which can charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes and only needs to charge the vehicle for five minutes to get a 100-km range.
Its V2L (vehicle to load) function can supply up to 3.6 kw of power. The V2L port is located at the charging port on the vehicle exterior. Using a converter, customers can charge high-power electric equipment which can be used for outdoor activities like camping or picnics. The outside port provides power even when the vehicle is turned off. Its E-GMP can support both 400 V and 800 V charging infrastructures and its multi-charging system uses the world’s first-patented technology that operates the motor and inverter to boost 400 V to 800 V for stable charging compatibility.
Its Ioniq 6 follows the success of the Ioniq 5, its fast-charger can charge from 10% to 80% and in just 18 minutes and only needs five minutes to a 131-km range. It also has similar V2L functions as the Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 6 has already won several accolades including category wins at the 2023 World Car Awards in the EV and design segments. Hyundai calls it an “electrified streamliner” because of its gorgeous silhouette and can speed up from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds, and from 80 to 120 km/h in 4.6 seconds.
Jaguar I-Pace
Inchcape, the country’s distributor for British luxury vehicle brand Jaguar, will showcase the I-Pace, which is equipped with a 50kW DC rapid charger, and has a range of up to 270km per hour of charge. It was previously awarded winner of World Car of the Year, World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year. Jaguar calls it the most advanced, efficient and refined sports saloon it has ever produced which has a total range of about 470 km with its AWD platform.
Jetour
This is perhaps the cutest of all EVs in the show. Jetour will showcase its Ice Cream EV, a 4-seater hatchback that has a high-ground clearance of 120mm that uses a 27hp 13.9 kwh electric motor with a 170km that’s a perfect city runabout.
Lotus
Autohub Group, the distributor for Lotus cars will unveil the Lotus Eletre, the brand’s electric-hyper SUV with a race car DNA, as Lotus describes it. Very much like its sports car siblings, this gorgeous EV has well-designed vents and ducts that channel air over and through the sculpted bodywork to boost range, speed, and handling. Although we do not have the final PH specs yet, it is said to generate a whooping 905 hp (675 kW) with its twin electric motors that can provide high torque power through all of its four wheels, giving unparalleled acceleration and control in all conditions. Autohub is also showcasing its Segway Ninebot electric scooters at the event.
Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz will be conducting test drives at the event with its EQA 250 and EQB 250 EV models alternatingly between the 3-day show. The EQA 250 will be available on October 19 and 21, while the EQB 250 will only be available on October 20. The EQA has a 66.5 kwh motor and is rated at 190hp with 385Nm of torque and a top speed of 160kph and range between 457km to 495km. The EQB has a similar motor rating but only has a range between 422km to 473km and similar top speed of 160kph. Mercedes-Benz is likewise distributed by the Inchcape Group.
MG
MG Philippines recently debuted its two new EV models in BGC, Taguig City and will showcase these two at the event, the Marvel R EV SUV and MG4 EV Hatchback. The Marvel R EV SUV uses a 2-Gear Electric Drive System that is fitted to the rear axle, and is rated at 186 PS and 410N-m of torque, and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.9 seconds with a top speed of 200kph. It has a 70kWh battery that has a 402-km range and can be charged from 5% to 80% in just 43 minutes with a Type-2 DC charger. The MG4 EV Hatchback, on the other hand, is designed with a rigid aluminum alloy subframe with 50:50 front and rear load split and low a center of gravity to achieve exceptional handling and comfort. It is rated at 203 PS and 250N-m of torque that can accelerate 0-100kph in just 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 161kph. It has a 435-km range on a full charge. Among its accolades include: The 2023 Car of the Year and 2023 Best Family Car from the UK Car of the Year Awards; the Bargain of the Year 2023 award from Top Gear; EV of the Year from Automotive Management Awards; Car of the Year 2023 from the Irish Times; and the 2023 Car of the Year from Which EV.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is considered to be the world’s first plug-in hybrid electric SUV. Since its introduction, it has sold over 260,000 units across Europe, North America, Japan and Australia as of 2022. The Outlander PHEV is the product of Mitsubishi’s long-time development of electrification technology, 4WD expertise, and Super All-Wheel Control or S-AWC technology. It features a twin-motor 4WD system and a unique PHEV architecture even allows it to power a smart-home system featuring the Vehicle-to-Home energy ecosystem.
Nissan
Japanese automaker Nissan said that it aims to have seven electrified vehicle models by 2026 with 80% of its lineup to be electrified by 2030. This was according to a recent announcement by its chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta. At the show, Nissan will showcase its Kicks e-Power which is Nissan’s distinctive electric-drive power system that uses a gasoline engine to generate electricity to power its high-output electric motor that performs like an electric vehicle. It is rated at 22km per liter, with about 900km of range for a full tank of fuel.
The Nissan Leaf, on the other hand, uses an electric motor to power the vehicle. Equipped with a suite of Nissan Intelligent Mobility features, it offers a smarter and safer drive wherever you go. It uses a standard 220V power source with a dedicated socket or a proprietary wall-box charger for faster charging of approximately 7.5 hours. These quick chargers can charge the Nissan Leaf from low battery indicator to about 80% in just 40 minutes.
