We look at 2023 H1 new model introductions
As COVID restrictions began to ease up and the global ecosystem and supply chain normalize, we saw an exciting first half for the auto industry. With production and assembly, as well as supply of parts and components going back to almost pre-COVID levels, the local market was also invigorated with a lot of new model introductions. Here’s a quick list and rundown.
Off to a great start
Lexus kicked off 2023 with launching the all-new 5th Gen RX at the new Mitsukoshi BGC showroom last January 16th. Honda also introduced the all-new 11th generation Civic Type-R, the most powerful Type-R model. GAC also held a media launch of the all-new GS8 SUV and all-new Empow, the first event staged by GAC’s new distributor, the Astara Group. Capping the end of January, was the launch of the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross.
In February, Aston Martin introduced the DBX707 high performance SUV. Another British SUV heavyweight was unveiled at the end of February with the unveiling of the new Range Rover Sport. Both these cars have redefined high-performance off-road luxury. The month also saw the launch of the Nissan Terra Sport. The month of March saw the unveil of the new BMW 7-Series and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
New model and brand launches at 2023 MIAS
The country’s biggest annual auto show had another successful run last April, unveiling 17 new models and variants on its 4-day weekend event.
First to launch on the press day was Ford’s next-generation Territory that features Ford’s new “Progressive Energy in Strength” design philosophy that comes with a longer wheelbase and higher ground clearance. This was followed by Subaru’s Evoltis updated model with Level ADAS semi-automated driving technology and a redesigned exterior. It also unveiled an updated Outback model, as well as the Forester GT Edition with a sportier exterior.
Peugeot introduced its e-2008 electrified crossover, reinforcing the French automaker’s commitment to have an electrified version of all its models this year. Chery Auto is another brand which has embraced electrification with the introduction of its Tiggo 5X Pro Hybrid, which is the brand’s entry-level electrified model. Chery Auto also introduced its Tiggo 7X Pro Hybrid at the MIAS.
GAC introduced the gorgeous Emkoo, with its edgy and futuristic fastback profile while Jetour had its first brand introduction with four variants of the X70 and Dashing crossovers, plus, the Ice Cream EV, the most affordable and cutest electric vehicle in the market priced at P699,000. MG introduced its ZS Nite Edition with its blacked-out Stardust grille and sportier exterior. Geely previewed its GX3 Pro, adding to a list of lineup for the local market. Comeback brand Great Wall Motor (GWM) showcased its new lineup of models including the Haval H6, its flagship model, plus the Haval Jolion, crossover and the GWM Cannon pickup truck.
Hyundai, now under a new distributor, introduced its second EV model at the MIAS, World Car of the Year winner Ioniq 6.
The last part of April also saw the unveiling of the Lexus RZ, the brand’s first fully electric vehicle at the Lexus Manila showroom in BGC. The month of May saw the model launches of Suzuki’s Spresso and BMW’s 3-Series while June was when the Mercedes-Benz’s GLC model was presented to the public. Last to debut for H1 this July was Honda’s new City and new Brio, both updated with new styling and safety features in a special event at the Mega Fashion Hall, SM Megamall.
Meanwhile, Toyota Motor Philippines officially introduced its first 7-seater Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) – the AllNew Toyota Zenix last June and towards mid-July, also saw the launch of the all-new Toyota Wigo at the Trinoma Mall’s Activity Center in Quezon City.
