The relationship between cars and watches are inexorably linked: Watches have been used to measure a car’s performance since the first car hit the road. Acceleration tests, lap times, time to distance and travel time. Of course, both are intricate pieces of fine engineering that rely on a symphony of precise movements, perfectly in-sync with each other. And time is a measurement of our love and commitment to our special, significant other: If a relationship withstands the test of time, it is more, than anything, pure, distilled and quite possibly, timeless.
We take a look at some fine pieces of horology.
Doxa watches
Doxa, founded in 1889 by Georges Ducommun, began as a maker of dress watches and other timepieces. Over the years, Doxa gained in size and branched out into other timekeeping markets. In the late 1960s Doxa decided to devote resources to create a watch to be used for diving.
The Doxa Sub 200 is a 42mm, 3-hand stainless steel diver’s watch that sports a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. It has a unidirectional rotating bezel and is available in 7 dial colors, with the option of a tone-on-tone rubber strap or a steel bracelet. If your significant other has an active, outdoorsy lifestyle, this is a good idea!
Oris timepieces
Oris was founded by Paul Cattin (right) and Georges Christian in the Swiss town of Hölstein. The pair bought the closed Lohner & Co watch factory, and on June 1, 1904 they formally started their new company. They named their new watch company Oris, after a nearby brook. Oris is known for their line of mechanical watches for diving, motorsport, and pilot’s watches, occupying a special position among Swiss watch manufacturers.
The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date is the quintessential Oris Pilot Watch in a special bronze casing. It first entered the Oris collection in 1938, more than eight decades ago. Today, the same design principles continue to inform the Big Crown Pointer Date. Over time, it’s been refined with material and mechanical improvements, but its timeless pioneering spirit remains. Perfect for the adventurous types.
Maurice Lacroix
Maurice Lacroix was founded in Sainelegier in the highlands of Jura as part of the Desco von Schulthess of Zürich in 1975. The latter was founded in the late 1800’s with interests in the silk trade, shifting their focus to timepieces in the 1960’s.
The brand is known for their unique style of watches. And here we have two examples, his & hers for those with an eye for timeless design.
The AIKON is available either as a 40-mm men’s timepiece or a smaller 35-mm women’s version based on Maurice Lacroix’s Calypso series; the stylish model has become an icon in its own right. The design language embraces bold, urban-styling and masterfully plays with contrasts. Ultimately, the Aikon is both elegant and secure, and the construction is very solid, a bargain at this price point.
Hamilton watches
The Hamilton Watch Company is a Swiss manufacturer of wristwatches based in Bienne, Switzerland. Founded in 1892 as an American firm, the Hamilton Watch Company ended American manufacture in 1969. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, the Hamilton Watch Company eventually became integrated into the Swatch Group, the world’s largest watch manufacturing and marketing conglomerate.
Its relationship with the silver screen has made it a truly memorable timepiece brand, featuring in numerous blockbusters, such as: Shanghai Express, Interstellar, Ocean’s Eleven, Men In Black 3 and more, ingraining it in pop-culture as a hip, stylish yet affordable timepiece of exquisite and sturdy quality.
The aptly named: “Jazzmaster Performer”, a 34-mm women’s timepiece, is the very essence of Hollywood chic from an era long gone but not forgotten. Made for those who favor function and style at once, it offers a powerful sport-chic appearance. The automatic timepiece has 80 hours of power reserve, too, making it a convenient timepiece to own if you cycle through a variety of timepieces. The steel case is accented by an understated light blue dial and a refined stainless steel.
