Roomy and stylish cabin

The Japan Mobility Show recently held at the Tokyo Big Sight in Ariake in Koto has been a blast. There were a record number of 475 participating companies that showcased their latest technologies, as well as their future innovations with the theme of “Mobility” in mind.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, for one, held a world premiere of its D:X Concept electrified crossover MPV, alongside the Japan launch of the all-new Triton pickup.

This “Delica of the Future” is a superb amalgamation of sorts, combining the spaciousness of a multipurpose vehicle and the remarkable on-road performance of a sport-ute, together with the power and comfort of a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle.

“The Mitsubishi D:X Concept is a concept car that brings

together the best of Mitsubishi Motors’ technologies – our electrification and all-wheel control technologies in particular – with a view to realizing a carbon-neutral society,” Takao Kato, president and chief executive officer, Mitsubishi Motors,

said during the press conference.

“We will continue to provide fulfilling mobility lifestyles that awaken the adventurous spirit of drivers and provide excitement for everyone on board.”

Built for adventures with no boundaries

At the onset, this Delica Concept is seemingly an image cut-out from the 1982 American science fiction flick: “Tron.” It instantly evokes a futuristic vibe with its Dynamic Shield front fascia resembling that of an armored van from a distant future. Projection laser lights serve as distinctive T-shape lights traversing from both ends, coupled by robust-looking side wheel arches and a skid plate all bring about the feeling of safety and protection. While a luxurious glamping-inspired copper body color adds to the all-new rugged revolutionary energy the vehicle brings in.

Inside, the vehicle is a complete contrast from the dark hues from its exteriors. Its two-tone color is a mix of light tan and off brown. From the rough and rugged appeal from the outside, this here, brings in a pleasant, convenient and roomy atmosphere.

The vehicle’s character is further defined by the side window graphics extending from the front of the cabin to the D-pillar and by the robust D-pillar.

The roomy monobox interior, meanwhile, provides ample space for all occupants. This is combined with rotating panoramic seats and a front window and see-through hood providing an open, wide field of vision.

Safety-wise, the S-AWC integrated vehicle dynamics control system is, on the other hand, adopted for the electric 4WD system, providing peace of mind in any weather or road conditions.

The Mitsubishi Delica has been around since 1968, with the current fifth-generation model being in the market for about 16 years. This may be a concept vehicle, for now, and would probably take years for this model to be in production. But, this here–at least–gave us a glimpse of what is to be expected in the near future.

Also, rumor has it that there will be an available lefthand drive for this Delica. If ever, it’s about time that Mitsubishi brings in this model in the local market to compete in the cutthroat segment dominated by the vans of Toyota, Nissan and other Chinese carmakers.
