Super Marvel at EV showdown

Ronald Rey M. de los Reyes

MG Philippines’ newest full electric vehicles, the MG 4 EV and MG Marvel R, have just recently made their way to our local shores. The MG 4 EV had two of its variants unveiled: The base variant Standard and the top-tier, Lux.

The MG Marvel R, on the other hand, only had its Alpha rear-wheel drive variant introduced. This variant, priced at the P2,588,888, features a 137kW electric motor and a 70kWh battery pack that delivers 184hp and 255Nm of torque. It can reach up to 402 km on a single full charge.

The Marvel’s top-tier All-Wheel Drive variant, meanwhile, only served as a display for curious onlookers at the BGC launch exhibit in Taguig City.

Recently, we just learned that this Marvel top-tier All-Wheel Drive variant will again be flaunted at the brand’s display at the upcoming Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City this week.

The EV Summit may just be around the corner. But before we get ahead of ourselves, here’s what makes the MG Marvel AWD so special.

First of all, it’s an All-Wheel Drive. And it’s not just any all-wheel drive system. It’s a Trimotor AWD. Meaning, its platform carries torque vectoring featuring three independent motors, each with a carbon-sleeved rotor that can keep, for some models in the market, up to 1,000+ horsepower all the way to top speed. For Tesla, for example, this platform provides the marque the most horsepower. This power, however, definitely comes with a significantly hefty price tag. The same goes with this MG Marvel, for sure.

Let’s do the math. For the Marvel base and mid variants, they only produce 132-137 kW Max Net power or 177hp (188hp for the local market). For the AWD top-tier, meanwhile, it can churn out 212kW or 285 horsepower. Just imagine the massive difference. Not only this, torque for the two former variants is only 255N-m. While, for this AWD, it’s 665 N-m. This is OBVIOUSLY leaps and bounds more of “oomph”. Hands down, it’s definitely a “David and Goliath” thing.

Other than a far superior performance compared to its siblings, the AWD tier also sports a BOSE Audio system, sporty seats with true leather, 360-degree camera and a panoramic sunroof.

No doubt. Truly marvelous, isn’t it?
