The 11th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit is just around the corner. And with the number of electric car unit sales steadily growing in the local market through the years: 1,013 units in 2022, 843 in 2021 and 378 in 2020, this 2023’s much-awaited summit promises to be more exciting than ever. In fact, according to the organizers, it will be its “biggest to date” yet in terms of participating carmakers, supply partners, aftermarket support, seminars and electric car launches.

The event, with the theme: “Plug-in and Accelerate”, slated this October 19 to 21, will be organized by the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines, together with the Manila Electric Company (Meralco), the Department of Energy and Nissan Philippines, Inc.

With last year’s implementation of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA) or the Republic Act No. 11697, together with the cooperation of the private sector beefing up the infrastructure needed for these EVs, the local electrified scene is rapidly changing for the better.

Although implementation still remains a big challenge as this involves extensive output and promotion according to EVAP president, Edmund Araga, he continues to be optimistic about it.

“The EV industry is still making necessary adjustments in terms of supplies and infrastructures. Transitions are on the way in terms of regulations being set by different government agencies involved,” he shared.

Part of this move are the carmakers launching countless new electrified vehicles left and right this week.

First, days prior to the start of the summit, Dongfeng Motor Philippines is starting the week with its opening salvo. On Monday, the carmaker’s three new models will be launched: The compact pure electric SUVs Forthing Friday and Nanobox, together with the Aeolus Huge Hybrid.

Meanwhile, during the actual summit, Chery Auto Philippines is coming up with its own full electric vehicles: The petite EQ1 and the EQ7, a potent EV in its stable that can produce 155kW and 225N-m of torque with a range of more than 500 km.
