Welcome the first-ever Mazda CX-60

Ronald Rey M. de los Reyes

For dads looking forward to a bright future for their kids, Mazda has come up with its own solution–finally. For years, the Japanese carmaker has embattled in-fighting between its conservatives and forward-thinkers. Recently, the latter has prevailed, well, probably for the best of everyone. Now, Mazda has come up with its own take on electrified vehicles, its own lease on life, or probably shall we say, sustainable mobility. Welcome the first-ever Mazda CX-60.

This newest prodigy represents everything the Japanese carmaker has worked for over the last century. The outstanding aesthetics, both outside and inside; superb driving performance and fine Japanese craftsmanship are probably a given. What’s new is its hybrid powertrain, although mild. Still, it’s unprecedented for the marque.

Sustainable greener mobility

With its commitment for sustainable mobility, this Mazda CX-60 gets a new take for a greener drive but without sacrificing the exquisite driving dynamics, inherent in every Mazda. The new-generation 3.3-liter longitudinally-mounted engine is being offered for both gasoline and diesel variants.

The inline-six-cylinder configuration produces less vibration due to its characteristic ‘perfect balance’, delivering a smooth and quiet engine tone. Also, it is lighter than Mazda’s own four-cylinder Skyactiv engine family.

For one, the gasoline-powered turbo-charged 3.3L Inline-6 HEV e-SKYACTIV-G engine churns out 284 PS and 450N-m, delivering a 0-100 kph time of just 6.9 seconds. The diesel-powered turbo-charged 3.3L Inline-6 HEV e-SKYACTIV-D–meantime–produces 254 PS and 550 N-m. It sprints from 0-100kph in 7.3 seconds. Both top at 219 kph.

The newly-developed SKYACTIV-DRIVE eight-speed automatic tranny without the use of a torque converter is smooth and responsive. It also offers a wider gear range that delivers an optimal balance between driving and environmental performance. The use of an electronically controlled multi-plate system in place of a torque converter results in clean and rhythmic switching between gears while also enabling accurate control of the M Hybrid Boost electric motor.

On the other hand, the new rear-biased i-ACTIV All-Wheel Drive system is supported by Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive), facilitating switching between four different driving modes to suit different driving conditions: Normal, Sport, OffRoad, and Towing.

3.3L AWD HEV Turbo-D Sport exudes a revered look with its black metallic alloy wheels, gloss black honeycomb grille and side view mirrors, black chrome on the front signature wing, fender garnish, and exhaust finishers, and matte black side window moulding.
Unparalleled exteriors and interiors

As always, the Mazda features exterior and interior aesthetics to drool over. Outside, its beauty is surreal, as ever, with its Evolved Kodo Design.

Now, it flaunts its powerful grille with its iconic wing shape complemented by adaptive LED headlamps, long hood and distinctive signature sleek look.

Both Mazda CX-60 variants feature crafted 20-inch aluminum alloys with 235/50R20 tires, a panoramic sunroof, and a hands-free power tailgate with height adjustment memory.

Inside, its cabin probably now sets the benchmark for interior quality, design and technology. Its craftsmanship is unparalleled, mixing well with its fine driving ergonomics. With its big 570-liter cargo hold, it is the most practical car in Mazda’s lineup. This can be expanded further with the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat.

At its centerpiece are three main displays—a 12.3-inch fully digital driver’s instrument panel, a 12.3-inch infotainment center and a 10.4-inch heads-up displays put all the information right where it is needed. The Mazda Commander Control knob, meanwhile, caps the overall control experience.

The 3.3L AWD HEV Turbo features aluminum panels and silver accents, black Nappa leather seats, and black leather interior upholstery. The 3.3L AWD HEV Turbo-D Sport, on the other hand, achieves the highest levels of craftsmanship with graphite panels and gunmetal accents, and tan Nappa leather seats with quilted Leganu suede inserts.
