Nissan’s own electric kick at MIAS

First, Nissan Philippines is showcasing at the Manila International Auto Show 2023 its e-POWER technology, the carmaker’s latest take in the world of electrification.

Basically, what is e-POWER? Well, it is Nissan’s distinct electric-drive power system that marries both gasoline engine and motor. Backed by the concept of the engine only generating electricity and the system being 100 percent driven by high-output motor, it performs like an electric vehicle (EV). It utilizes motor control technology derived from previous technologies on powertrain integration and energy management. From here, it delivers the smooth and quiet performance of the usual regular EV.

The system can freely control engine start since it is not directly connected to the wheels, reducing engine operation time by driving the vehicle with just the motor running from start to low/mid-range speeds. With this, it achieves exceptional fuel-rating since it generates electricity at efficient engine RPM. The system consists of a high-voltage battery and the powertrain, integrated with a high-power motor, inverter, gasoline engine and generator. Unlike conventional hybrid systems, wherein the wheels are driven by an electric motor and a gasoline engine, in the e-POWER system, the wheels are run by a high-output electric motor, very similar to an EV.

Locally, Nissan introduced the Kicks e-POWER last year. Priced starting at P1.2M, it is offered in three variants: The top-tier VL, the VE, and EL models. All three are equipped with a fully electric motor that produces 135hp and 280N-m of torque. Its 1.2L DOHC 12-valve three-cylinder engine—meanwhile—is used particularly to charge the battery while running at optimal speed.

Also, outfitted with regenerative braking, the Kicks comfortably allows itself to log in about 25km/L fuel efficiency.

In a statement during the vehicle’s inception, company head honcho, Juan Manuel Hoyos said, “We believe that this vehicle will be a game-changer in the market by providing an EV-like drive without compromising fuel-efficiency and cost of ownership. We want to get to a stage where sustainability and carbon neutrality is not just a goal, but a reality that every person can live with our technology.”

Nissan booth visitors this week can expect this e-POWER technology on full display in the coming days.
