As far as the top 10 sales performers are concerned, the November 2022 year-to-date (YTD) sales reports of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) and the Philippine Automotive Dealers’ Association (PADA) are basically the same as those of October 2022 YTD.
SAME, SAME
Toyota still leads the way with 156,874 vehicles sold YTD Nov 2022, scoring a whopping 49.75 percent market share per CAMPI, followed by Mitsubishi with 47,751 units sold for 14.86 percent market share. Ford is a distant third with 21,450 units sold for 6.68 percent market share according to PADA.
Nissan (19,373 units sold, 6.14 percent market share) and Suzuki (18,118 units sold, 5.75 percent market share) round up the Magic 5.
According to PADA’s list, Isuzu is in 6th place, Honda Cars in 7th, Geely in 8th, Kia in 9th (if “Others” isn’t included), while Mazda is 10th (if Hino, a brand of heavy-duty trucks, isn’t included.)
The consolidated Top 10 list of CAMPI and the Truck Manufacturers’ Association (TMA) ranks the last 5 differently: Isuzu No. 6, Honda Cars No. 7, Kia No. 8, Geely No. 9, and Foton No. 10. The demotion of Geely to No. 9 by CAMPI is explained by CAMPI’s pegging the YTD Nov 2022 number of units sold by Geely at only 3,335 compared to PADA’s 8,695 units.
WHAT’S NEW
To find out what’s new, one must look below the Top 10 list and track the progress of Hyundai Motor Philippines (HMPh), the new official sales subsidiary and distributor of Hyundai passenger cars in the Philippines that was inaugurated on the 1st of June 2022. In effect, HMPh, with Dong Wook Lee as its president, took over the distribution of Hyundai passenger cars from Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI), which is now dedicated to selling and distributing Hyundai buses and trucks.
HMPh joined CAMPI just in time to participate in the Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) last September where they displayed the multi-awarded Hyundai Ioniq 5 all-electric crossover.
Before the PIMS was held, HMPh’s sales figures began to be included in the joint CAMPI – TMA monthly sales reports. In August 2022, HMPh ranked 15th on the CAMPI list with sales YTD of 500 units for 0.23 percent market share.
In September, according to CAMPI, HMPh moved up to No. 14 with YTD sales of 872 units for 0.35 percent market share. October saw HMPh still at No. 14, but with sales climbing to 1,226 units for a bigger slice of the market: 0.44 percent.
In November, both CAMPI and PADA ranked HMPh as No. 13 although with different YTD total sales: 2,071 units per PADA for 0.64 percent market share while CAMPI posted 1,826 units for 0.58 percent market share. The difference could be due to CAMPI counting HMPh’s sales starting only from June, while PADA included all Hyundai sales figures, even those from HARI, starting from January 2022.
Whatever, HMPh’s monthly sales from June up to November 2022 as recorded by PADA clearly indicate growth: 31 units in June, 39 in July, 519 in August, 383 in September, 354 in October, 600 in November. Thanks to HMPh, the Hyundai brand is well on its way to regaining its perch in the Top 10 Sales Performers list which was lost in 2021.
WHAT’S OFFERED
At present, HMPh offers five of Hyundai’s latest models to the Philippine market: the Creta subcompact SUV, Tucson compact SUV, Staria van and Stargazer MPV.
The arrival of the Ioniq 5 fully electric crossover in the first quarter of 2023 is much anticipated, as it has garnered multiple awards including 2022 World Car of the Year, World Electric Vehicle of the Year, World Car Design of the Year, 2022 German Car of the Year, 2022 British Car of the Year, Japan Import Car of the Year 2022, Car and Driver EV of the Year from Car and Driver magazine. The Ioniq 5 beat more expensive competitors such as the Audi e-tron GT, BMW i4, BMW iX, Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, Ford Mustang Mach-e GT and Tesla Model S Plaid.
HMPh is investing big time in promoting the Hyundai brand. For example, aside from conducting out-of-town test drives for the media, HMPh is celebrating its first Christmas in the country by powering seven larger-than-life Walt Disney-themed zones in the Mall of Asia (MOA) Night of Lights immersive audio-visual drive-through attraction. The MOA Night of Lights opened on December 1 and ends on January 8, 2023. MOA customers can choose any of five Hyundai vehicles to drive through the Night of Lights. HMPh has set up a customer lounge towards the exit with a display area and redemption booth. Inside, the Ioniq 5 supplies electricity to Hyundai’s signature café through the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function and in the process allows MOA customers to see and learn more about this multi-awarded electric vehicle.
Now the guessing game focuses on when in 2023 the Hyundai brand, through Hyundai Motor PH’s efforts, will rejoin the Top 10 Sales Performers honor roll.
Meanwhile, CAMPI president Rommel Gutierrez pointed out that YTD 315,337 vehicles have been sold representing a 31 percent growth compared to the same period in 2021.
Based on this, Gutierrez said the industry is confident of exceeding the sales target of 336,000 units this year.
