Which vehicle types of the auto brands are raking in the highest sales

Vios, Territory, Terra and Traviz produce the big numbers heading into the final quarter

Last week, PDI Motoring listed the auto industry’s top 10 sales performers of Year-to-Date January-September 2022 and their top three best-selling vehicles.  This time, for the information of readers who may be planning to buy a new car before the year ends, here is a tabulation of the top 10’s best-sellers per vehicle type, the number of units sold, and the price range.

The tabulation is divided into seven vehicle types/categories: Passenger Car (sedan and hatchback), Compact Crossover/SUV, Midsize SUV, Multipurpose Vehicle (MPV), Minivan/Van, Pickup Truck, and Utility/Light Duty Truck/Van.

Toyota, as usual, has built an insurmountable lead YTD September 2022 in three vehicle types: Passenger Car with the Toyota Vios having sold 24,086 units, MPV with the Innova scoring 12,773 units sold, and the Hilux achieving 19,144 units sold.

The Toyota Vios, in fact, has been the industry’s best-selling product across all vehicle types since it was launched on the market. Compared to the China-sourced Geely Emgrand and Kia Soluto, the Vios is competitively priced at P676,000 for the base, manual transmission variant going up to P1.050 million for the top-end variant.

In the pickup truck vehicle type, Toyota Motor PH Corp. has sold 10,407 more Hilux units than the closest contender, the Nissan Navara with 8,737 units sold.  The SRP of the Hilux’s entry-level variant at P861,000 is less than the Navara’s lowest SRP of P1.041 million.

However, in the MPV category, the Toyota Innova’s score of 12,272 units sold is being threatened by the Mitsubishi Xpander’s 10,831. The Xpander’s price range of P1.05M – P1.180M is lower than the Innova’s P1.191M-P1.764M, which could be one reason why it’s selling briskly.

Notice that in the Compact Crossover/SUV vehicle type, China-sourced models have taken the lead.  The Ford Territory is way ahead with 6,430 units sold, followed by the Geely Coolray with 3,284 units sold.  This despite the Territory’s and Coolray’s comparatively higher price ranges: P1.277M – P1.31M for the Territory, and P1.073M-P1.269M for the Coolray.  The Kia Stonic, another China-sourced crossover, is fifth behind the Honda Brio and Honda BR-V although its price range of P835,000-P999,000 is much lower than either the Territory’s or the Coolray’s.

Mitsubishi Motors PH Corp. posted a seemingly insurmountable lead in the Minivan/Van vehicle type, with 6,319 units of the L300 sold.  The runner-up is the Nissan Urvan with 2,318 units sold.  Comparing their respective price ranges, the L300 is more affordable with a price range of P813,000 – P998,000 versus the Urvan’s P1.162M – P1.896M.  The Urvan, of course, offers more creature comforts than the L300.

The price ranges listed here may change any time due to the global supply chain disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting suspension or slowdown of car manufacturing worldwide.  The vehicle type most vulnerable to an SRP increase is the pickup truck since the Department of Trade and Industry plans to impose an excise tax on it.
