Evolutionary styling and powerful engines define Lexus’ new crossover
Lexus’ next-generation crossover is here. Fittingly, it’s called the NX. It brings new interpretations of Lexus’ design language, efficient powertrain technology, and cabin craftsmanship.
The NX is larger in all dimensions than the model’s previous generation. Length, width, height, and wheelbase have all been increased. This benefits interior space, with rear-seat passengers enjoying more room. The added size also gives the NX a more imposing road presence. Lexus designers employed larger tires and shorter rear overhangs, and wider tread, to improve both the car’s looks and handling charcteristics.
Lexus dubs the NX’s design target as “functional beauty.” The NX is unmistakably a Lexus, with a large spindle grille up front. The grille is more upright and features a subtle frame, complementing the long hood and integrating smoothly into the car’s lines. At the rear is a first for Lexus: the brand name spelled in full rather than the customary logo. A signature light blade that connects the L-shaped rear combination lights complete the sportier look of the NX.
A vehicle isn’t a Lexus without a sumptuous interior, and the NX is no exception. The NX is the first vehicle to apply Lexus’ new Tazuna concept. The word describes the rider’s control of their horse using the reins. This implies that the driver has direct, intuitive control of the NX via “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road” principle. This allows for a more confident, rewarding driving experience.
Aiding the “eyes on the road” idea is the NX’s intuitive cockpit layout. Important controls like the central gauges, multimedia screen and information display are arranged at eye level in on area. Meanwhile, controls like the starter button, shift lever, and airconditioning controls are grouped together for easy reach and operation. Grip the Lexus NX’s steering wheel and feel the ideal cross section at hand, and reach for the shift lever to find it at an optimal distance with no need to change posture. There’s a large 14-inch center screen that augments the gauges and available head-up display.
While the driver enjoys an optimized layout, the front passenger can relax in the luxurious lounge feel without any intrusion from the driver’s area. High-quality materials and finishing embody the Lexus takumi craftsmanship. Front seats use a supportive shape including robust side bolsters and a concave area to give space to one’s elbows. Noise and vibration-suppressing materials are used throughout the cabin. Sound levels are 15% lower than the previous model’s.
The NX will come standard with Lexus Safety Sense (LSS) active safety suite. This is comprised of Pre-Collision System, adaptive high beam, automatic high beam, lane trace assist, lane departure alert, and dynamic radar cruise control. The LSS has been designed to feel natural, to give the driver greater confidence and assurance on the road. The new door swtiches are electrically activated, inspired by Japan’s ubiquitous sliding doors.
The NX will be available in three variants:
NX 350 F Sport is the pinnacle of the LX lineup. This is powered by the new 2.4-liter inline-four turbocharged engine, good for a robust 279hp and 430Nm, from as low as 1700 rpm. The engine is paired with a Direct Shift-8 automatic transmisson and electronically-controlled full-time all-wheel drive. The new engine features a high-speed combustion system, center-injection direct injection, and a closely-placed turbocharger and catalyst. Price is P4.548 million.
Since this is Lexus, there are of course two hybrids available: The NX 350h Premier (P4.488 million) and NX 350h (P3.338 million). These combine a 2.5-liter inline-four engine with high-output electric motor, to benefit both performance and fuel efficiency. The gasoline engine produces 190hp and 239Nm of torque. The front and rear motor-generators add 182hp and 54hp respectively. The NX 350h Premier features electric-folding rear seats, 17-speaker Mark Levinson Surround System, and power rear hatch with kick sensor.
The NX uses the GA-K platform, with a lighter, more rigid body and low center of gravity. The NX is the first vehicle to be developed especially with an intention to implement the Lexus Driving Signature. This is characterized by linear steering feel, confident traction, and supreme safety.
